Artists back from Jamaica, praise music organisation

Reggae artists who left the country on February 12 to perform at the Reggae Month celebrations in Jamaica returned on Saturday with unforgettable memories.

Born Afrikan, Blasto, Don Tarz, Kellie Divine and Anne Matumbi were invited by the Jamaica Reggae Industry Association (JaRIA) through Minister of Labour Vitumbiko Mumba.

Blasto reflected on how the opportunity to perform in the home of reggae has helped him understand the genre.

“Experiencing the culture first hand has given me a better understanding of the reggae genre. Seeing how Jamaicans appreciated the work that I do certifies my skill and I can confidently say I am a reggae and dancehall artist,” he said.

Blasto also talked about the new collaborations the trip has provided to them which, he said, are potential boosters to his music career.

“The links we have established will get us into the global reggae network and that’s where the business is. It has also brought us closer to more promoters and producers in the busines,” he said.

Don Tarz commended Jamaican music industry, saying it is more advanced and organised.

“Jamaicans take music as a serious business. Artists are given the value they deserve to fight for spots on international platforms,” he said.

Don Tarz said while it is possible for Malawians to shine outside the country, there is need to build more confidence and proper grooming to reach the standards.

Team leader Annie Matumbi said the experience they got in Jamaica was massive.

He expressed hope that the trip would inspire more local artists to pursue international recognition.

“More often, we look down on our talents thinking they fall short of international standards. But the truth is that we have something to offer and we are capable of standing on big stages,” said Annie Matumbi.
