Nyasa Big Bullets will be fined K500 000 for not wearing sponsors TNM plc-branded kit in their Super League match against Savenda Chitipa United on Saturday in Karonga.

The People’s Team won the match 3-0.

Confirming the development, Super League of Malawi (Sulom) general secretary Williams Banda yesterday said this comes after the Super League champions were forced to change their TNM-branded kit whose colours clashed with Chitipa’s maroon uniform.

“As the visiting team, Bullets were supposed to change and upon negotiating with Chitipa, their hosts [Chitipa] accepted to change since Bullets did not have any other TNM-branded kit, but later on they [Chitipa] changed their mind and opted to put on their home [maroon] uniform.

“This forced Bullets to wear their pink training kit which was not branded with the league sponsor’s logo contrary to the rules and regulations of the league; hence it carries a K500 000 fine,” he said.

However, while confirming that circumstances forced them to wear an unbranded set of uniform, Bullets chief administration officer Albert Chigoga said they were yet to be informed about the fine.

“Otherwise, it was not by design not to put on TNM branded uniform,” he said.

Bullets were also fined for a similar charge when they played TN Stars in Kasungu.

At the start of the season, Sulom warned clubs that they risked being fined should they not use TNM-branded uniforms in league matches.

The warning was contained in a reminder letter on the league’s procedures and requirements addressed to all the clubs dated April 11 2019.

Meanwhile, Karonga United have been fined K1 million for improper conduct and bringing the game into disrepute during their league match against Moyale Barracks at Karonga Stadium two weeks ago.

The Ingwina ya Karonga were found guilty of hurling insults and pouring water on match officials. They also blocked the passage to the dressing rooms.

Karonga chairperson Alufeyo Chipanga Banda accepted the punishment, saying: “We hope the punishment will serve as a lesson to our supporters that such conduct will lead to such penalties.

“It is unfortunate because the team has no sponsor, but then we have no choice but to hunt for funds and pay the fine. We are struggling to pay salaries and then we have to look for money to pay such hefty fines?
