Blantyre District Health Office (DHO) nursing officer Jacqueline Kolove has asked nurses in the district to work hard as nursing is not just a profession but also a vocation dedicated to serving people.

She said this on Saturday at Chilomoni Health Centre in Blantyre when nurses partnered Gift of the Givers Foundation to commemorate the World Nursing Day as part of celebrating Florence Nightingale, who is the founder of the nursing profession.

“As nurses, we commemorate this day because our founder Florence Nightingale was born on May 12 1820 and we celebrate the day by discussing issues that affect nursing. We also share experiences, strengths and weaknesses and learn from each other and award nurses that have performed well,” said Kolove.

She urged her fellow nurses to learn from Nightingale’s life of compassion and empathy, dedication to patient care, leadership and advocacy.

“There should be continuous learning and professional development, resilience, perseverance, collaboration and teamwork. Nurses should cultivate the passion and embrace the calling,” said Kolove.

Gift of the Givers Foundation country manager Sherifa Mia said they partnered the nurses in commemorating the day as healthcare is one of their priority areas.

“World Nurses Day for us is important because healthcare is one of our priority areas as we do a lot of work together with Blantyre DHO and the Ministry of Health. We felt that it was important to take part in supporting nurses with some gifts but also award some of them,” she said.

Chilomoni Health Centre nursing in-charge Chikondi Macheso, who received an award for her outstanding performance, said the uniforms and shoes will motivate them to work hard.
