Blantyre gets tablets for collecting education data
Rays of Hope Ministries through Teaching at the Right Level (Tarl) Programme has handed over 48 Samsung Galaxy A9 tablets worth K35 million to Blantyre District Education Office.
The tablets will be used to collect data on performance of learners in 48 public primary schools.

Speaking on Thursday during the handover at Lunzu Secondary School in Blantyre, Rays of Hope ministries programmes manager John Zakeyo said the organisation understands high literacy levels in the sub-Saharan region as nine out of 10 children fail to read by the age of 10.
He said: “In Malawi, the situation is the same. Approximately eight out of 10 learners fail to achieve literacy and numeracy competencies by the age of 10, therefore, the intervention recognises
that learners might be in the same class but might be at different literacy and numeracy competencies.
“Tarl, therefore, assesses the learners, groups and supports them according to their learning needs. Further assessments are done to move up learners from one level to the upper skill level.”
Blantyre District Council chief education officer Alfred Chidiwa thanked Rays of Hope for the support.
“It was a challenge to work without tablets because it meant Zonal Education Management Information Systems officers going to every school to collect data. But this time, everything will be done digitally,” he said.
Chidiwa said the district’s education office will also provide 20 more schools with tablets to benefit from the programme.
