Malawi Blood Transfusion Service (MBTS) in partnership with Malawi Red Cross Society have intensified blood collection to sustain its availability in the hospitals.

Under the partnership, Red Cross is providing logistical support to MBTS while and mobilising communities donate blood.

Speaking during a blood donation open day site at Ekwendeni Market in Mzimba North on Friday, Red Cross project officer Thokozile Moyo said the partnership has enabled volunteers to donate blood.

She said: “Through the partnership under Blood Donor Recruitment Project, Red Cross is mobilising people from Mzuzu City and Mzimba North to donate blood.

“MBTS, on its part, is conducting the blood collection sessions in those targeted communities.”

MBTS public relations officer for Mzimba North Mphatso Bazale said the exercise has been a success.

“The exercise at Ekwendeni Market was successful. We had 69 people that donated blood. This is a good number because it exceeded what we expected from that site.

“We are therefore calling upon other organisations to make a Red Cross gesture because they need more blood for public hospitals” she said.
