Joyce Banda Foundation says people affected by hunger in Zomba District need immediate food support.

The foundation’s managing director Edith Arkridge said this on Monday in Zomba during the distribution of maize to 500 households in Domasi in Zomba Malosa Constituency to cushion the communities from hunger.

She said most of the households in the district were affected by Cyclone Freddy that hit the Southern Region in mid-March last year, destroying crop fields.

“Majority of them have planted their crops, but as they await harvests, they need food support to sustain them,” she said.

Arkridge encourged the communities, saying that despite El Nino hitting the country this year, they should take care of their crops in the field until the next harvest.

“Food security at household level is essential,” she said.

A beneficiary, Patricia Mataka from Chilunga Village in Senior Chief Malemia. said they have already applied fertiliser in their maize fields.

She said together with some communities in her area, they are committed to sustainably alleviate hunger.

Joyce Banda Foundation was established by former president Joyce Banda, who governed the country between 2012 and 2014.
