Bullets 7 points from defending title

FCB Nyasa Bullets will be four points from retaining the TNM Super League title if they beat relegation-threatened Red Lions this afternoon at Balaka Stadium.

The defending champions, who lead the table on goal difference, are tied with second-placed Mighty Mukuru Wanderers at 54 points.

However, Bullets have three games in hand since Wanderers have played 28 matches.

Silver Strikers are third with 53 points from 28 games as well.

The Nomads can amass 60 points maximum if they win their remaining two matches while Bullets can reach 69 points if they win their remaining matches.

On the other hand, the Bankers can finish on 59 points if they win their remaining two matches.

Fourth-placed Chitipa United have 44 point from 28 games and fifth-placed Kamuzu Barracks (KB) have 42 from 27 games.

However, Chitipa and KB are out of the race since they cannot go past 51 points even if they win their remaining matches.

This means Bullets can defend the title if they collect seven points in their remaining matches against Lions today, Blue Eagles, Karonga United and Dedza Dynamos Salima Sugar as well as at home against Silver.

Wanderers are remaining with matches against Mighty Wakawaka Tigers and Civil Service United while Silver are remaining with matches against Bullets and KB.

After a draw in the Blantyre derby on Sunday, the Nomads coach Mark Harrison said the title is for Bullets to lose.

“We just have to wait for Bullets to drop points,” he said.

Silver coach Pieter de Jongh was the first to throw in the towel last week, saying he will concentrate on the Airtel Top 8 and the Castel Challenge Cup campaign.

He said: “I have to be honest. We have no chance of winning the league. We can fight for number two, but third place is more realistic.”

But Bullets coach Kallisto Pasuwa feels there is still work to be done as his side has to collect points away from home while missing key players due to injuries.
