Bwaila Lions fun walk raises K450 000 for paediatric cancer

Lions Club of Bwaila on Saturday held a fun walk which raised K450 000 which will go towards supporting paediatric cancer patients at Kamuzu Central Hospital (KCH) in Lilongwe.

In an interview, Bwaila Lions Club President, Renneck Malunda said the event was held to raise awareness on childhood cancer which is affecting many children in the country, and generate support for patients.

He said September is the month that the Lions Club holds cancer awareness activities.

“So, we set this day to conduct awareness activities in Lilongwe to reach out to the masses, also with a call for support to ease the suffering of children with cancer,” said Malunda.

On his part, KCH district chairperson for paediatric cancer Chimwemwe Banda said the K450 000 will assist in addressing the funding gap in cancer treatment at the facility.

He said: “There is a wide gap when it comes to treatment and awareness of cancer in general, but specifically paediatric cancer.

“What we have done today is a big step, we have put the message across to the populace and we have also raised some funds that will be used to help patients at Kamuzu Central Hospital.”

Banda said the KCH Paediatric Cancer Ward is operating at maximum capacity, and accommodates patients referred from as far as Mzuzu for treatment.

The Lions Club thanked their partners, including Lilongwe Dairy which donated 10 cartons of Enjoy juice and 10 cartons of Maheu to support childhood cancer patients during the fundraising fun walk. Other partners such as Image Printing Works, Generation Lounge, and Stern Graphics were also acknowledged.

The fun walk began at Crossroads, proceeded to the Game complex.
