Bwaila Rotary Club of Lilongwe has disinfected toilets and emptied 20 pit latrines at Likuni Primary School to improve sanitation and hygiene at the institution.

Speaking on Saturday after the exercise in Lilongwe, Bwaila Rotary Club president Hefezee Ibrahim Jamal said Rotarians in the world observe basic education and literacy in September.

“So we are at the school to teach about hygiene and  to empty their latrines. We have also sprayed the toilets to kill flies and remove bad smell to make them hygienic for the learners,” he said.

Jamal said they repaired a borehole at the school and constructed a new well to improve water supply.

“We will contact our friends in the Water and Sanitation Department to repair the faulty borehole,” he said.

The school’s deputy head teacher Maria Phiri said the school has 25 pit latrines against 2 500 learners, but 16 of the latrines were full.

“These latrines  were dug long ago. Learners were complaining about the smell and flies from the toilets. We thank Bwaila Rotary Club for spraying the toilets and emptying the latrines,” she said.

She attributed the problem to lack of running water at the school after Lilongwe Water Board cut supply because of unpaid bills.

“We have water challenges as we only have a single borehole which has its own problems. It is faulty and sometimes doesn’t work. Even the water from the borehole is not good for the learners to drink because it is salty,” said Phiri.
