Patients at Bwaila Fistula Centre can now afford a sigh of relief following a donation of items, including wrappers (zitenje) and soap by St Pius Catholic Women Organisation (CWO) of Padre Pio Station in Area 49, Lilongwe on Saturday.

After the donation, Bwaila Fistula Centre coordinator Margaret Moyo thanked the women, saying the donation will help alleviate the patients’ needs.

She said: “These patients are always leaking, hence; they need a good number of clothes as they change now and again. The soap, the wrappers and everything they have brought for the women are important and we are grateful. “

Upon handing over the items to the patients, St Pius CWO secretary Pilira Songo said their visit to the hospital did not only benefit the patients but that the Christian grouping learnt more about fistula.

She said: “We agreed to come and cheer fistula patients here at the same time we wanted to learn more about fistula. We are happy that we have learnt about fistula from the nurses and shared some great moments with the patients. “

According to Songo, the donated items are worth K150 000 and were collected from fundraising activities and contributions by the women.

Bwaila Fistula Centre is the only facility in the country that handles fistula cases on a daily basis. It has 33 patients.  n
