Chinese Medical Team on Tuesday handed over medical equipment worth K22.4 million to Mzuzu Central Hospital as part of Chinese Government’s support towards health needs of Malawians.

The medical items include anesthesia laryngoscope, vital signs monitor, fatal heart monitor, electric blood pressure monitor, surgical gowns and some other personal protective equipment that were in short supply at the the Northern Region referral facility.

Speaking during the handover of the donation, Wendy Ren, the doctor in-charge for the China Medical Team at Mzuzu Central Hospital said with the support, they expect improved health service delivery at the hospital and hope that Malawians will continue to benefit from medical assistance based on the bilateral relationship between China and Malawi.

She said: “We hope Malawians continue to benefit from our continued medical assistance. And we sincerely wish the people will stay healthy and happy. ”

Last year, the Chinese Government also constructed a Computerised Tomography (CT) Room at the hospital.

“We are six specialist doctors here and provide medical assistance in internal medicine department, surgical department, pediatrics department, obstetrics and gynecology department, anaestheology
department and radiology department.

“The CT Room [establishment] was also funded by the Chinese Government last year. This demonstrates the good relationship the two countries are in,” added Ren.

Receiving the donation, Mzuzu Central Hospital Paediatric Surgeon Dr Peter Yamikani Chakakala Chaziya said Mzuzu Central Hospital is specialist and referral medical centre and it is sad therefore that it
operates in short of some key medical devices.

“Being a specialist hospital, we need equipment befitting the hospital status. We have quite a lot of needs. We have increased operating rooms but we are in short of equipment. For example, if achild has a foreign body we send the case to Blantyre because we don’t have equipment to handle such kind of cases at our hospital.

“To this far, we appreciate the support the Chinese Government has rendered to the hospital which will go a long way in reducing the equipment shortfall at the hospital, ” he said.
