Daud said the traditional leader’s initiative was worth emulating. “I had a chance to interact with some of the learners and I have encouraged them to work hard to excel in their academic studies,” she said.
The deputy minister said President Lazarus Chakwera is committed to ensuring that young people are in leadership positions, including ministerial and in various sectors in the civil service.
“As such, we need educated youths who can work in such positions,” said Daud.
In his remarks, Senior Chief Mwabulambya said it was disheartening to see half of the learners drop out from the school.
“It was disappointing to see that among the dropouts were those from Standard One and Standard Two. To sustain the achievement, I will lead my subjects in formulating by-laws to ensure every child is in school,” he said.
The school’s head teacher Dominic Nkhata said child neglect is one of the factors causing dropouts.
“Most parents do not value education in this area. The school serves 18 villages but most of the people do not care about the welfare of their children,” he said.
Out of the 133 learners, 69 are girls. The school has 756 learners
