Civil seek to end Silver dominance

The Capital City derby returns this afternoon at Civo Stadium with Civil Sporting Club still searching for a formula to end their rivals Silver Strikers’ three seasons dominance in the TNM Super League.

Silver are unbeaten against Civil in five consecutive Super League derbies.

The best Civil have managed since 2015 are draws.

The last league meeting saw the Bankers grabbing maximum points thanks to a late goal from Kondwani Mwaila, who broke Civil supporters’ hearts after the Civil Servants put a grand fight.

The rivals also met in Airtel Top 8 and the Bankers again pulled a fast one on their rivals beating them 2-1 in a two-legged quarter-final.

This afternoon, the Bankers will be hoping to maintain the status quo.

But they come up against a much improved Civil side with impressive Raphael Phiri, who has eight league goals, leading the attack.

Phiri has been Civil’s tramp card as they perch on third position with 19 points from 10 games.

Coach Franco Ndawa is known for his ability to read opponents.

But beating Silver remains his biggest challenge since moving to the Capital City last season to head the Civil Servants technical panel.

However, he was sceptical that this afternoon could be the day to bring smiles on Civil supporters.

On the other hand, Silver lead the league table with 26 points, four above second-placed Nyasa Big Bullets and are in overdrive mood.

Jack Chiona, Newman Mwamsamale and Mphatso Phillimon are expected to come to the party to ensure the Bankers maintain their four point gap at the top.

Though the Bankers struggled to beat 10-man Mafco last Saturday at Silver Stadium, coach Lovemore Fazili promised to tighten all loose ends in readiness for this afternoon derby.

The Bankers need a victory to keep second-placed Big Bullets, who face Azam Tigers at Mulanje Stadium, at bay.

Coming from a disappointing Airtel Top 8 final loss to Blue Eagles, like wounded buffaloes Bullets will be out to re-launch their league campaign against tricky Tigers.

Rivals Be Forward Wanderers on the other hand host TN Stars at Balaka Stadium.
