Listen to this article

TNM Super League clubs have accused Super League of Malawi (Sulom) of lacking transparency in their K26.5 million of TV rights from Mpira TV, a Football Association of Malawi (FAM) initiative.

Mpira TV has raised K69 million in subscriptions, digital media rights, advertising and free to air revenue between January and September 2022.

Out of the amount, TNM Super League clubs will equally share K26 582 536, according to FAM  marketing and broadcasting manager Tulipo Mwenelupembe.

He said digital media rights fetched K1 500 000, Mpira Television subscription was K49 513 500, advertising revenue was K3 950 000 while free to air fetched K15 000 000.

But Super League clubs have accused Sulom of failing to communicate to them on the Mpira TV revenue disbursement.

Nyasa Big Bullets chief administration offer Albert Chigoga said they have not heard from Sulom on the matter despite several reminders.

He said: “Sulom produced a report on the broadcasting rights for the first round. Since then, no disbursement has been done.

“We wrote Sulom to remind them about the payment and we are still waiting for it.”

Silver Strikers chief executive officer Thoko Chimbali also expressed the same concerns.

But Sulom president Tiya Somba-Banda, while confirming the payment from FAM, said the clubs will get their share in due course.

He said: “The payment was indeed made. The clubs should have patience as we are working on logistics on the disbursement.

“We will reconcile with the club’s liabilities with us [Sulom] and pay off the net to the teams as soon as possible.”

Mibawa Studios, who produce content for Mpira Television, will get K19 125 807 while Zuku, who are carriers of the televison on their decoder, will receive K14 854 050.

FAM and Sulom share is K3 322 817 each while K2 755 472 is for Mpira TV administration and operating costs.

FAM commercial and marketing director Limbani Matola said they already paid  to all the stakeholders.

He said: “All the stakeholders were paid their share of their revenue as of September 30 2022. As to when TNM Super League clubs will get their share, that can better be explained by Sulom. We do not want to usurp their responsibility.”

FAM last year unveiled Mpira TV football production and broadcasting deal worth K350 million per year with Mibawa Studios producing content for the television which is on Zuku decoder’s channel 064.
