Council plans to build new stadium in Mzuzu
Mzuzu City Council says it plans to demolish Mzuzu Stadium to pave the way for a new facility in the long-term.
The council’s chief executive officer Gomezgani Nyasulu said this when the Minister of Youth and Sports Uchizi Mkandawire toured the facility yesterday to appreciate their short and long-term plans on the facility.
The minister observed that the stadium has outlived its lifespan, having been constructed in 1970 and there was need to construct a new one.

“Our advice was that in the short-term, they should rehabiliate the facility so that it is able host matches.
“The council then shared with us their plans to demolish the stadium and move the government to assist them in building a new facility.”
Nyasulu said the minister’s assurance for support has given them momentum to proceed with preliminary designs and cost estimates.
He also said in the meantime, renovations are underway to ensure that the stadium will be ready by the time the 2025 football season kicks off.
“We will do everything possible to have the designs ready in time. At the meantime, we are renovating the area where the fence collapsed in preparation for the new season,” he said.
Mzuzu-based TNM Super league sides Moyale Barracks and Mzuzu City Hammers use the facility as their home ground.
Mzuzu Stadium was built in 1970 and has a 15 000 capacity.
The minister was accompanied by officials from Malawi National Council of Sports.
