Football Association of Malawi (FAM) electoral committee has approved all the candidates nominated by affiliates for various positions in the association’s forthcoming elections scheduled for December 16 in Mzuzu.

A statement from the FAM electoral body, signed by its chairperson James Masumbu, a private practice lawyer, says the approval follows a meeting which the committee had on Saturday in Blantyre.

Reads the statement in part: “The main agenda of the meeting was to discuss nominations for candidates for different positions in the Football Association of Malawi executive committee.

“After the screening process, the electoral committee approved names of the nominated candidates for the 2023 FAM executive committee elections.”

Masumbu: They can appeal within seven days

It further says any party not satisfied “with any of the foregoing decisions of the electoral committee may appeal to the electoral appeals committee within seven days of the publication of this list”.

It says those that may wish to appeal can write to the FAM general secretary.

For the position of president, incumbent Walter Nyamilandu, who has served for 19 years, will face Super League of Malawi (Sulom) president Fleetwood Haiya in a two-horse race.

Former first vice-president James Mwenda will be seeking to retain his old position when he faces Christopher Madalitso Kuyera, who is one of the members in the current executive.

Incumbent second-vice president Othaniel Hara will tussle with Northern Region Football Association chairperson Lameck Zetu Khonje.

Seven aspirants, namely Sulom executive member Daud Ntanthiko, Mighty Mukuru Wanderers board secretary  Chancy Gondwe, National Football Referees Association chairperson Patrick Kapanga, Central Region Football Association general secretary Benard Harawa, Southern Region Football Association chairperson Raphael Humba and current ex-co members Chimango Munthali and Muhammad Selemani will battle for four executive member slots.

Incumbent Felister Dossi will face off with Wanderers board member Mervis Mangulenje for the women’s member slot.
