The Football Association of Malawi (FAM) founding president Sydney Dawson Chikafa says he will live to remember the recognition he received on Saturday during the association’s annual general meeting (AGM) in Salima.

“As long as I live, I will never forget that moment. I did not expect it. Considering the years that have passed, I thought I was forgotten,” said the 91-year-old from his home in Ndirande Township, Blantyre.

The whole house rose and clapped hands in unison as Chikafa walked to the high table to receive an award from FAM president Walter Nyamilandu for outstanding service to the domestic game.

Chikafa founded FAM in 1966, having served as Shire Highlands Football Association chairperson.

“I am at peace. The travelling itself was a joy. It rekindled memories of my travels to places such as Dar es Salaam in Tanzania. It had been ages since I travelled. You should share the credit for informing people about my whereabouts,” said the father to late star players Robin and Patrick ‘Bulldozer’ Chikafa.

FAM also recognised refereeing legend Bester Kalombo, veteran administrator Steve Zimba and ex-Flames coach Kinnah Phiri before calling out Chikafa.
