FAM leadership accused of imposing affiliates’ candidates
Some football officials led by outspoken Isaac Jomo Osman have accused the Football Association of Malawi (FAM) leadership of imposing candidates on affiliates ahead of the Central and Southern region football associations’ elections next month.
In leaked audio clips, Osman, who rallied behind the current FAM leadrship during the 2023 election campaign, alleges that some FAM executive members are working tirelessly to campaign against candidates deemed not to be in their camp, citing Central Region FA general secretary candidate Christopher Njeula.

He said: “What wrong has Njeula done to deserve such harsh treatment? Just because he is not in your camp?
“I stand for the truth and I will not be intimidated by anyone. I am a stakeholder and I spend a lot of money in the game and I love football.”
“I campaigned for the current [FAM] leadership, but I won’t kneel down for someone who is messing up the game. Let the elections be free and fair, do not impose candidates on the electorate. Let them vote for candidates of their choice.”
Osman said all this is because there some people who come into football to advance personal interests other than developing the game.
He said: “Right now, women and youth football is in a mess because of such greedy people.
“Football administration is not done in newspapers or social media where good things are written or said about you just because you buy them drinks.”
Another official, former FCB Nyasa Bullets national supporters committee general secretary Mabvuto Chiwambo said: “You are also imposing candidates at National Youth Football Association… You are repeating the same mistakes that the previous administration made.
“We are aware of executive members, who instead of running the game at national level, are busy intimidating delegates in the districts. We know that you have been to Ntcheu, Phalombe and other places and we are watching you,” he said.
Mulanje-based SRFA general secretary aspirant Ishmael Sande confirmed that he is one of the victims of intimidation.
“There is a lot happening behind the scenes, but we will act at an appropriate time,” he said.
But responding to our questionnaire yesterday, FAM president Fleetwood Haiya said he was not aware of the issues.
