FAM touts technology askey to football progress
Football Association of Malawi (FAM) technical director Benjamin Kumwenda says football performance can only improve if the country’s elite coaches embrace technological advancements in the game.
He made the statement ahead of the start of a two-day refresher course for Super League coaches this morning at Mpira Village in Chiwembe Township, Blantyre.
The course, which will be facilitated by South Africa’s Bafana Bafana performance analyst Sinesipho Mali, will focus on player performance analysis ahead of the 2024 football season.
He said: “Team or player performance analysis using modern technology is the new football coaching trend that every coach must embrace for the quality of our game to improve.
“Most coaches in the country are not well-versed with technology yet the modern game requires that they should be able to analyse strengths and weaknesses of their opponents before every game to identify areas where they can capitalise on in a game situation.
“Since most of our games are now beamed on television, the ideal video analysis becomes handy.”
Kumwenda said the coaches, who must be computer literate, will be taught how to cut videos of their players and opponents’ performance for easy analysis.
Mighty Mukuru Wanderers assistant coach Meck Mwase and Fomo FC coach Gilbert Chirwa on Monday said they are happy that FAM has realised the need to keep elite football coaches in line with the technological advancements in the game of football.
“Technology plays an integral part in modern football and the imminent refresher course, which focuses on performance analysis, is the way to go. This will not only improve our knowledge, but also make the game more competitive,” Mwase said.
National Football Coaches Association general secretary Davie Mpima also welcomed the course, saying it will help coaches to have serious and worthwhile planning ahead of matches.
