Fashion for celebs
The Red Carpet inaugural gala organised by the Story Club FM on December 13 2024 at the Bingu International Convention Centre (Bicc) was a great testament of Malawi’s potential and progressive fashion industry.
It attracted celebrities from different creative sectors suchas music, film and literature who dazzled with impressive fashionable attires. From social media influencers to radio and television personalities, musicians to actors, and entrepreneurs to marketers, the event was the first of its kind which saw Malawian celebrities coming together to celebrate their achievements as well as showcasing extraordinary fashion.

Story Club FM director Shadreck Chikoti said the Red Carpet was an exclusive annul platform aimed at Malawian celebrities to mingle and showcase fashion.
“The entertainment industry is evolving globally, creating awesome business opportunities for artists. But the question has always been: How can we bring Malawian artists together for this rare opportunity? That’s why Story Club FM came up with the Red Carpet,” said Chikoti.
He added that he was overwhelmed with the astonishing sense of fashion displayed.
“What I have seen today is unbelievable. Stars are really shining beautifully. Let me encourage you all to keep up the good work because this is amazing. It speaks volumes that Malawi is heading in the right direction,” he said.
Many participants voiced gratification of the country’s fashion designers who included Xandria House of Fashion, Lilly Alfonso, H. Clothing, Ciar Designs and Doreen Dolph Billiat.
One of the famous musicians, Piksy, reacted: “Everyone is looking fabulous tonight. People have dressed really well. This simply tells us that Malawi has got talent. We really have creative designers in this country.”
Another popular social media personality-cum-marketer Dorothy Kingston described the event as a business confluence of Malawian celebrities, including designers who were shining the light of many celebrities.
“Tonight, in this exquisite room, I don’t only see lovely faces glittering with calmness of fashion sense but, also, promising business opportunities.
“I see musicians, fashion designers, writers, marketers and actors who should exchange contacts to cultivate business relationships,” said Kingston, who is also Film Association of Malawi president.
Covering beautiful attires designed by H. Clothing, the couple of Kingston (Dorothy and musician Zeze) exuded c o n f i d en ce likened to that of America’s former celebrity couple of Kim Kardashian and Kanye West who made several public appearances with stunning fashions.
Kingston hailed the country’s fashion designers for upping their game.
For Lilongwe-based female dancehall musician Kellie Divine Njuchi, cladding locally-made fashion symbolises the power of homegrown creativity.
“I feel the music I sing conveys powerful messages. It makes a lot of sense for me to sing Malawian songs while wearing Malawian attire because together they speak
View Banda of Roy View Designs (RVD) commended the business relationship between fashion designers and artists.
“The fashion industry in Malawi is growing because of mutual business partnership which exists between clients such as celebrities. As one people, one country, we must embrace a common goal of elevating our country to the global status,” said Roy View.
He added that with the current economic challenges facing Malawi, there was a need to embrace homegrown industries such as fashion to spur economic growth.
Speaking at last year’s Fashion Expo organised by Alfonso at Bicc, Minister of Tourism Vera Kamtukule touted fashion as one of the components of the tourism industry which was key to promoting Malawi’s economy.
