FLA shifts Bafana Legends’ match due to elections

The Football Legends Association (FLA) has said the match between Flames Legends and their South African counterparts will be shifted from September 6 to November or December this year due to the upcoming General Elections.

The association’s board chairperson Jim Kalua said in an interview yesterday that the initial date also crashed with other activities.

He said: “We felt that the date for the match is too close to the General Elections and, therefore, we thought it wise to reschedule the match.

“The other reason is that we are yet to get a final confirmation from our South African colleagues as they are still working on a few logistical issues.”

The FLA boss also said Champion Stadium, who committed K30 million sponsorship towards the event, has fulfilled their promise.

“I can confirm that we are in receipt of the money from management of Champion Stadium and we appreciate their gesture,” he said.

Meanwhile, Kalua has said some of their members such as England-based Esau Kanyenda and Acton Munthali as well as US-based Mphatso Namwali, who missed last year’s match against Zambia, have indicated their availability.

“They missed the match against Zambia due to some logistical challenges, but they have assured us of their availability,” he said.

Kanyenda said he is keeping his fingers crossed about his availability so that he can touch base with fellow Flames and Bafana Bafana legends.

“It will be great to turn back the hands of time and show people flashes of our old skills,” he said.

Last year, South Africa-based former Flames midfield maestro and coach Ernest Mtawali captained the Flames’ legends.

The match, which was played at Bingu National Stadium, ended goalless.

Bafana Bafana legends include Mark Fish, Teko Modise, Katlego Mphela, Sibusiso Zuma and Siphiwe Tshabalala.
