Said Dimba: “As a ministry, we are impressed with what we have seen here. What is remaining is to fix the perimeter fence, facelift the offices, erect a high tower, fix the runway lights which is long enough that even Boeing 700 can land and take off. It only needs to add asphalt to make smooth.”

He said the resumption of flights at Karonga International Airport will wait for maintenance works at Mzuzu International Airport which are under way.

In an in interview, Malawi Airlines Safety Department flight safety officer Captain Frank Madzi said the airport is in good condition to play host to category five flights, but needs some attention.

“We need to have at least two fire fighters to match the category five status. We also need to have two wind soaks which we have been assured that will be fixed.”

Madzi, is a pilot himself, said apart from boosting tourism destinations in the region, the resumption of Malawian Airlines will also help businesspeople to save time.
