Flood survivors get relief items

Select Financial Services has donated assorted food and non-food items to 38 households affected by floods in Senior Chief Mwirang’ombe in Karonga District.

Speaking in an interview on Friday during the event at Ngara Primary School, Select Financial Services acting regional manager (North) Blessings Nyenyezi said as an institution operating in the district, they felt duty-bound to give back to the community.

“When we learned about this disaster, we mobilised resources to assist these people as part of our corporate social responsibility,” he said.

Ngara Village Civil Protection Committee chairperson Bridget Mchawi said the situation was dire as the floods destroyed 68 houses and 400 maize fields.

“We thank Select Financial Services for the timely intervention. People have no food as they lost their property and food items,” he said.

One of the beneficiaries, Violet Vinkhumbo, 82, from Maxwel Village in the area, also hailed the organisation for the donation.

“When disaster hits you, you are reduced to beggars because you are supposed to start all over again,” she said.

Karonga district civil protection committee member Aaron Mwenilupembe said government was doing its part to provide for the affected people.

“However, it is overstretched, therefore, it needs partners such as Select Financial Services to fill the gaps,” he said.

The donated items included bags of maize flour, salt, soya pieces, buckets and plates valued at K1.5 million.
