Floods claim two lives in Chikwawa
Two people from Malemia Village in Senior Chief Ngabu in Chikwawa have died following floods that occurred in the district on Thursday.
The deaths were confirmed by Chikwawa District Disaster Risk Management officer Charity Machika yesterday.
Said Machika: “Apart from the loss of the two lives, the floods have affected 1 200 households in Senior Chief Ngabu’s area and 450 households in Paramount Chief Lundu’s area. We are on the ground to establish the hecterage affected by the floods.
“The floods, which came after a downpour that started around 10am to 1pm, also partly damaged Nyakamba Bridge and flooded Ngabu Rural Hospital wards.”
Senior Chief Ngabu regretted the loss of lives and implored duty-bearers to quickly repair the Nyakamba Bridge, which the floods have damaged.
He said there are mobility challenges in the area since Cyclone Freddy also damaged Mikalango Bridge last year.
The Senior Chief said the floods have displaced some of his subjects who are sheltered by relations as they wait for food and non-food assistance.
William George from Malemia Village says he lost everything to the floods.
