Football legends invest K10.4m in medical scheme

Football Legends Association (LFA) has channelled K10.4 million of the proceeds from their international friendly against Zambia towards facilitating a medical scheme for its paid-up members.

The match, played at Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe on December 28, grossed about K17 million.

In an interview , LFA board chairperson Jim Kalua said they started the process on Monday.

“When we formed this association, the main aim was to look at the welfare of our members and the priority was to join a medical scheme and I am happy that we are fulfilling our goals,” he said.

“We can only win the trust of our partners and well-wishers by meeting some of our objectives through such initiatives.”

Kalua said they have been talking to a number of medical insurance firms such as Medical Aid Society of Malawi and Medhealth.

“Apart from the medical scheme, we are also in talks with funeral service firms such as Goodwill Funeral Services on going into partnership,” he said.

Kalua said only members who pay monthly membership fee will be included in the schemes.

“We, therefore, urge our members to be committed by paying the monthly membership fee,” he said.

Minister of Youth and Sports Uchizi Mkandawire hailed the football legends  for their efforts.

“This is commendable because it shows they are making strides and as government, we are committed to offering a helping hand in their initiatives wherever necessary because we appreciate the role they played and continue to play towards the development of football,”  he said.

The LFA has 268 members.
