Foundation for awareness of Ombudsman’s role

Democracy Works Foundation has called for strengthened institutional collaboration with the Legal Affairs Committee of Parliament to educate the public and Parliament about the role of the Office of the Ombudsman in the country.

Speaking in Lilongwe on Wednesday evening during a meeting between the Legal Affairs Committee of Parliament and the Office of the Ombudsman aimed at enhancing Parliament’s coordination with oversight agencies for effective public integrity management, the foundation’s regional director Augustine Magolowondo said such collaboration would help provide the necessary technical and financial resources, improve awareness of the Ombudsman’s role, and encourage active engagement.

Malera: Institutions must act with integrity

He said: “The office was established under Section 120 of the Republic of Malawi Constitution to investigate injustices, address maladministration and promote justice, particularly for individuals with limited alternatives for recourse.

“We need people to understand the role of Ombudsman to encourage individuals to seek recourse through the Ombudsman to promote justice and build trust and confidence among the public, ultimately benefiting the people of Malawi.”

Taking her turn, Ombudsman Grace Malera called on the Parliamentary Legal Affairs Committee to continue ensuring government institutions act with integrity, saying that will help promote accountability and transparency in government ministries, departments and agencies by incorporating human rights into laws and monitoring adherence.

She observed that the Legal Affairs Committee is essential in addressing public concerns and exploring practical solutions for improved collaboration.

Parliamentary Committee on Legal Affairs chairperson Peter Dimba said the Ombudsman plays a vital role in ensuring citizens receive justice from public offices.
