Gift of the Givers Foundation country manager Sherifa Mia says the agriculture programme they are implementing in Traditional Authority (T /A) Chigaru in Blantyre will promote food security in the area.

She said this on Tuesday when the foundation distributed 67 fruit tree seedlings to community members as part of commemorating the life of Nelson Mandela and the ongoing malnutrition programme in the area.

Said Mia: “We have been implementing two projects in this area. One is a nutrition programme at Mdeka Health Centre and an agriculture programme at Chelifa Village where we supported farmers with an irrigation scheme.

“We have provided 67 patients and farmers with fruit trees. The significance of 67 is that for 67 years, Mandela sacrificed his life for the people of South Africa through his dedication to the struggle for social and political justice.”

Group village head Kaphikamtama thanked Gift of the Givers for introducing the two initiatives in the area, saying they have improved people’s nutrition status and food security.

He said: “Gift of the Givers has demonstrated that it’s a foundation committed to helping underprivileged communities achieve food security.

“Through Sagonja Irrigation Scheme, people are able to grow crops for food and sale.”

The event was commemorated under the theme ‘Climate change, food and solidarity’.
