South African-based German organisation Goethe Institut, has oiled the 2013 Mwezi Wawala Arts Festival to be held at Nanzikambe Arts Café in Blantyre next month by creating a second opportunity for Malawians to watch the Germany’s popular theatre group, Theater Konstanz, performing on Malawi soils.

Theater Konstanz visited Malawi in 2010 through a talent exchange partnership project with Nanzikambe Arts Theatre which also saw the Malawi group touring Germany with several theatre performances.

Speaking in an interview on Sunday evening, the festival’s coordinator Vincent Maluwa said Goethe Institut has poured in sponsorship that will help the group participate in the festival.

“We are proud to inform followers of the Mwezi Wawala Arts Festival and those that were inspired by Theater Konstanz performances when they visited Malawi that the group will be in the country next month for the festival. Goethe Institut will pay for all travel expenses from and back to Germany,” said Maluwa.

Meanwhile, the festival has said Nyamalikiti Nthiwatiwa, Elisabetta Pataso from France and two other artists from China have joined the list of artists to perform at the festival taking the number of artists registered for the festival to over 70.

According to Maluwa, there are also other local companies coming in to sponsor the event, but as we went to press, only Aqua Pure Water had confirmed its support for the festival.

In other developments, Visual Arts Association (VAA) has joined the festival programme and it will display products made by the visually impaired artists days before the festival.

Keeping the venue in international standard, is the festival’s main concern and according to Maluwa, the renovations that have been taking place at the café has revamped the standards and it is now ready for the three-day festival running from August 30, 2013.
