Good second round start for Eagles, Nomads

Second and third-placed Blue Eagles and Mighty Mukuru Wanderers yesterday reduced the gap with TNM Super League leaders Nyasa Big Bullets after registering away wins.

The Malawi Police Service-sponsored Blue Eagles edged Karonga United 1-0 at Karonga Stadium while the Nomads beat Kasungu-based TN Stars 2-0.

Following the win, Eagles have reduced the gap with the People’s Team to nine points as they have 33 points from 16 games while Wanderers are two points behind Eagles from the same number of games.

Scored the Nomads’ opener: Sanudi

At Karonga Stadium, Eagles ended their six-game winless run courtesy of Gabriel Chirwa’s strike in the 63rd minute.

The hosts’ coach Christopher Nyambose blamed the loss on missed chances.

He said: “It’s out first loss at home since I took charge. We created a number of chances but we couldn’t make good use of them.

“We conceded a silly goal from a set-piece. We could have done better, but it happens. It’s part of the game. It wasn’t just our day and we’ll come back stronger.”

Eagles coach Eliah Kananji said it was a relief to win after six games.

“Our plan was to start the second round on a positive note and the win is a big boost,” he said.

Following the loss, Ingwina ya Karonga have dropped two places to 10th. They have 20 points from 16 matches.

At Kasungu Stadium, Stanley Sanudi led by example when he drew first blood for the Nomads in the 14th minute.

It was a defenders’ afternoon for the Lali Lubani outfit as Peter Cholopi sealed their victory.

Wanderers coach Eddingtone Ng’onamo said despite the win, there are still some areas they need to work on.

“It is not easy to get full points here. Our plan was to score early goals so as to unsettle them and it worked. We are happy to have won out opening second round game,” he said.

TN Stars are 14th in the 16-team top-flight with 12 points.
