Call-up players to feature, PS advises

overnment has asked FAM to consider downsizing Flames’ call-ups by concentrating on players likely to play the game being prepared for so as to save resources.

Over 30 local players spend weeks in camp only for the majority of them to pave the way for professionals, a development Youth and Sports principal secretary II Justin Saidi said was not necessary.

“We are saying ‘how best do we have the people who will play?’ You can call more professionals, but only two play. We are looking at the money which can be channelled to other needs,” Saidi explained on Monday.

The Nation had sought an update from government on Flames’ preparations for the September trip to Nigeria in the decisive 2014 World Cup African qualifier.

Saidi said they met Sports Council over Flames’ preparations, players’ remuneration and camping. The players want a hike from the current K30 000 for a win.

Observed Saidi: “It is not necessary calling up more local players in camp when you know professionals will dominate the final squad. You ought to prepare a team that will play. In the Namibia game, issues of coordination were evident. This could point to the call-ups.”

Sports Council executive secretary George Jana shared government’s position, but noted that it was up to FAM to implement the suggestion.

“We have been talking with them [FAM] about it. Unless the idea is development, if you are preparing for an event, it is better calling players that you need. But at the end of the day, you do not want to prescribe. It is just an advice,” Jana explained.

Hellings Mwakasungula, who was until early last year a Flames regular, yesterday agreed with government’s concern, but called for a balance.

“Government is right, but on the other hand, we need depth in the squad to cover up for injuries and illness. It is still important to call up additional players to have a feel of the environment,” argued the Silver Strikers assistant coach.

FAM president Walter Nyamilandu said they will try to live within their means prescribed in the lean K70 million budget for the year.

Last year, South Africa’s Platinum Stars midfielder Robert Ng’ambi complained about being called up to warm the bench.
