Minister of Foreign Affairs Nancy Tembo says the Malawi Government intends to increase trade with Morocco through exports of sugar, tea and other commodities.

The minister said this in Lilongwe on Sunday when she graced the Morocco Throne Day commemorations hosted by the Embassy of Morocco.

She commended the Government of the Kingdom of Morocco for offering duty and quota free trade arrangements to Malawi goods.

Said Tembo: “It is the intention of Malawi to increase trade between the two countries and also take advantage of the AfCFTA [African Continental Free Trade Area] framework to export sugar, tea and other commodities to Morocco.

“Malawi resolves to continue cooperating with Morocco at bilateral, regional and international levels for the mutual benefit of the two countries.”

In his speech, Moroccan Ambassador Abdelkader Naji said this was the first time the Throne Day has been celebrated in Malawi since the opening of the embassy last September.

The envoy said the two countries share the same ambition of an integrated, stable, secure and developed Africa for the benefit of its people.

“I would like to see more bilateral cooperation, more mutual support, coordination and above all, a long-standing common position on the issues of common interest, whether bilaterally or internationally,” said Naji.

Various high-level guests, including government ministers, diplomats and corporate partners attended the event.

NBS Bank plc chief executive officer Kwanele Ngwenya commended the embassy for being a part of the solution to some of Malawi’s challenges through the support they provide to Malawi in various fields.

The Morocco Throne Day is held annually on July 30 in commemoration of His Majesty Mohammed VI’s accession to the throne of the Kingdom of Morocco.

Through its bilateral ties, the Government of the Kingdom of Morocco has supported Malawi in various areas, including education where it has provided numerous scholarships to Malawians and also in agriculture.

In 2022, Morocco donated 10 000 metric tonnes (MT) of fertilisers which was processed into 52 000MT for the Affordable Inputs Programme.
