Habitat for Humanity aids 430 households

Habitat for Humanity has donated building materials to 430 Cyclone Freddy survivors from Traditional Authority Jenala in Phalombe District to help them construct temporary houses.

The donated materials include timber, robes, hammers, pangas, hoes, blankets, shovels, nails and tents amounting to K160 million.

Speaking on Saturday during the handover, the organisation’s country director Anock Kapila said houses were the worst affected during Cyclone Freddy and the donation was one way of fulfilling the organisation’s vision of providing decent houses.

“We are going to teach them how to construct temporary houses using the materials provided and also how to construct better houses when they have resources to reconstruct their houses,” he said.

Phalombe District director of planning and development Kelvin Harawa thanked the organisation for the timely assistance, saying this will help survivors whose houses were destroyed by the cyclone.

He said in the meantime, Phalombe District Council is appealing to well-wishers to continue supporting the district fin all sectors of education, health, agriculture and housing.

Harawa urged the beneficiaries to use the materials for the intended purpose.

“Whether you are going to sell  them in Limbe, we are going to trace you with assistance from police,” he said.

A beneficiary, Enifa Basikolo, thanked the organisation for the assistance.

She said  her three children have been putting up in a kitchen at her relatives place since Cyclone Freddy hit in mid-March.
