House committee summons police IG
Parliamentary Defence and Security Committee has summoned Inspector General (IG) of Police Merlyne Yolamu to explain issues relating to political violence and security concerns in the country.
In an interview yesterday, committee chairperson Salim Bagus said the decision to summon Yolam follows a general outcry that there is a security lapse in the country.

He said: “So, we have asked the Inspector General to appear before the committee because we want to ask her what is actually happening that is leading to growing insecurity in the country.”
Bagus cited recent cases of political violence where some alleged politically connected individuals hacked peaceful demonstrators at the National Memorial Tower in Area 18 in Lilongwe.
He, however, did not indicate when the committee intended to meet Yolamu, saying she was yet to respond to their letter.
In an interview, Yolamu said she has not received the committee’s invitation letter.
She said: “When the invitation reaches me I will see what they are saying, but at the moment I have not received anything.”
As the country heads to the September 16 General Election, political violence and intolerance have intensified.
