Opposition members walk out of Parliament

Some opposition members of Parliament (MPs) moved out of the House yesterday in protest against the First Deputy Speaker Dalitso Kazombo chairing the Committee of Supply.

In an interview, one of the members that walked out, Blantyre City South MP Sameer Suleiman (Democratic Progressive Party-DPP), said they were not happy to have the First Deputy Speaker of Parliament to chair the proceedings.

The MP said they preferred the task to be handled by committee chairpersons as is the standard.

However, the MPs were divided as some remained in the House and continued participating in the deliberations.

On the division, Suleman described the situation as unfortunate saying it shows lack of loyalty of some DPP members to the party.
