If I were: Lot Dzonzi

Inspector General of Malawi Police Service (MPS), yes my IG! I would realise that when thieves beat the security system and break into the official residence of the whole Vice-President Saulos Chilima, then I have every reason to be very, very worried.

If I were the top cop, I would realise that when housebreakers sell dummies to my men and then have the luxury of stealing beer bottles and wines from the storeroom of the Veep’s residence, then there is reason to be concerned about the state of security of not only the country’s second big shot, but also ordinary citizens.

I would realise that if these thieves were smart enough to beat the outside security system, then chances are that they might have gone a step further and probably attempted to catch the Veep off guard, hold him hostage tie him nyakula and demand a ransom from government.

How I wish I were the IG because I would realise that if the whole Veep’s residence is broken into then even the big shot at State House and his sweetheart Getrude Hendrina, have every reason to be afraid.

Yes, while the MPS has already stepped up an operation to root out violent crimes, there is need to be proactive other than reactive.

That is of course, if I were my man bwana Dzonzi, unfortunately I am not the IG.

Inspector General of Malawi Police Service (MPS), I would realise that if vandals can be brave enough to raid a presidential palace area, then something is amiss in terms of security.

If only I were the IG, I would appreciate that there is a cause for worry because not only the property is at risk, but also the life of the President and indeed her family.

How I wish I were bwana Dzonzi, because the development would give me plenty of food for thought on whether MPS is doing enough to provide security to its citizens, especially when the whole First Citizen’s yard can be vandalised.

I certainly would realise that when vandals can make their way to the palace grounds and manage to drain oil from a transformer, then something is terribly wrong.

Even if it were an inside job, the development would be worrisome and to some extent, I would seriously consider stepping down to save my integrity.

That is, of course, if I were Lot Dzonzi. Unfortunately I am not the country’s top cop, but could be one considering the circumstances!
