Chipolopolo FC on Friday walked home worth K1.5 million after emerging champions of  this season’s Mzuzu District Football League.

The league sponsored to the total package of K5 million, with K3 million being injected by Innobuild Private Limited with the rest financed by Football Association of Malawi (FAM).

Chipolopolo FC defeated Masm 2-0 at Botanic Ground in Mzuzu City in their last campaign to lift the title.

They won six games and drew once to finish top with 19 points.

Speaking in an interview, the team’s coach Komani Vinkhumbo said they defied the odds to emerge champions.

“Despite being labeled as underdogs, we defied the odds to emerge champions,” he said.

Avengers FC who came second with 15 points got K750 000 while third-placed side Emsizini got K350, 000.

Mzuzu District Football League general secretary, Alphack Mkandawire said he was impressed with the display by the teams since the inception of the competition in August last year.

“At the end of the day, we want talent to come out of the league. We have run the league smoothly. The teams were fantastic and showcased great skills,” he said.

Commenting in an earlier interview on the coming in of Innobuild Limited as a partner,  Northern Region Football Association’s (NRFA) chairperson, Lameck Khonje expressed gratitude saying their sponsorship has raised the hype of the district league.

“We had fruitful discussions with the management of Innobuild Limited who have topped up the sponsorship package for our district football league, this means Mzuzu District Football League is the highest sponsored in the country at K5 million,” he said.

On his part, Innobuild Limited Northern Region’s branch manager, Gift Nyasulu said his company believes in creating happiness to partners it is working with hence taking a step towards football development which is followed by many people in the country.

“We believe in creating excitement by giving back to the partners we are working with, so we decided to assist NRFA with K3 million,” he said.

The league is part of the FAM K60 million District Football Leagues which was launched at a ceremony held at Chintheche Ground in Nkhata Bay last month.
