Bregger Kaingwe and Roza Mbilizi turned on a classic display to win the Standard Bank Be More Golf tournament on Saturday at Nchalo Sports Club (NSC) in Chikwawa.

The tournament was sponsored in partnership with Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) in promoting-etax.

Kaingwe put up a classic show on the back nine on which he had bogeys on holes 14 and 17 which were the centrepiece of his triumph in men’s category.

On the other hand, Mbilizi who is ranked the best female golfer on the domestic scene with an 11-handicap, had a score of 36 points.

Said Mbilizi: “It was tight today, but I had lots of pars and a birdie on hole 16 which made the difference. I was consistent and the weather was also good and I had fun.”

The champions went away with a fitness treadmill and a trophy each.

It was a tight contest in the men’s category in which the top three were tied on 36 points and had to be separated by a countback.

Kaingwe counted out Peter Matiru who in turn counted out Wills Samati while Zelda Menne was the runner-up in women’s category with 33 points.

Mbilizi also had the longest drive in women’s category while Gilton Chiwaula Jnr did it in men’s section.

Nearest to the pin in men’s category was Guntej Nain while Lusubilo Chakaniza achieved the feat in women’s section.

David Medi won the sponsor’s section followed by Ireen Mphatso and William Nuka, respectively.

Standard Bank deputy head of corporate and investment banking (CIB) Linda Manda said they were impressed with the turnout and were excited that the tournament was oversubscribed.

“We organised the tournament to interact with our customers and, above all, as a bank we encourage people to exercise. It is important that we have healthy people, that is why we had the Be More Race recently.

“We are more than just a bank and we drive the growth of Malawi through sports. We would like to thank Illovo Sugar [Malawi] plc for allowing us to host a tournament here. To all golfers, our customers and clients, we say thank you,” she said.

The tournament attracted 70 golfers.
