Capital Oil Refining Industries (Cori) Limited, through its Kukoma cooking oil brand, has doubled netball giants Kukoma Diamonds’ sponsorship to K9 million.

It was a double dose of good news for the domestic netball powerhouse as Cori also extended sponsorship for a year.

Cori sponsorship coordinator Violet Kapolo said they have increased the sponsorship in the quest to motivate the players.

“Our expectations are that the girls will double their efforts and sweep all silverware. The priority is players’ welfare as we embark on an ambitious drive to make the team the best in Africa,” she said during a press conference held in Blantyre on Saturday morning.

Kapolo said last season Diamonds’ performance fell short of expectations despite retaining the Rainbow Paints Blantyre and Districts Netball League (BDNL) championship.

“We didn’t impress at national level, no wonder we surrendered both the GOtv and Presidential cups. Let us challenge ourselves to reclaim those titles. We want our performance to reflect Kukoma Cooking Oil brand,” she said.

Kapolo said they took time to renew the sponsorship due to some “internal administrative issues”.

She said: “Among them was the need for elections which have since been conducted and we congratulate the new executive committee and pledge our full support.”

Kapolo also asked the executive committee to be accountable and prioritise players’ welfare.

Diamonds general secretary Chimwemwe Bakali expressed gratitude to Cori for extending the contract as well as doubling the sponsorship.

“The significance of the sponsorship cannot be overemphasised. We are the highest sponsored netball team in the country and we do not take that for granted.

“I want to assure the sponsor that we will account for every tambala and ensure that we become invincible again. The sponsorship will help develop netball in general as we also contribute a number of players to the national team,” he said.
