Kananji dumps Eagles amid Creck links

Lilongwe-based TNM Super League outfit Blue Eagles coach Eliah Kananji has resigned from the Malawi Police Service side amid reports that he is heading to Creck Sporting Club, The Nation understands.

Kananji tendered his resignation on Thursday, but his last match will be league fixture against Blantyre-based newcomers Ekhaya FC tomorrow.

His resignation comes barely four months after renewing his contract with Eagles up to 2027.

Blue Eagles spokesperson Kaitano Lubrino in an interview on Thursday asked for more time before responding to Kananji’s resignation.

He said: “I need more time to gather information on the issue before I can respond.”

But a source at the Area 30-based outfit in an interview said they expect Creck to buy out Kananji’s two year contract.

In an interview, Kananji confirmed parting ways with the side he joined in 2021 to replace Gerald Phiri Senior.

However, he remained tight-lipped about speculation linking him to Creck Sprting to replace Joseph Kamwendo, who was fired on Monday after being suspended a fortnight ago due to the team’s poor performance.

During his tenure at Blue Eagles, which began in 2021, Kananji experienced a rollercoaster.

The team suffered relegation to the Central Region Football Association’s Chipiku Stores League in the 2023 season, but bounced back to the TNM Super League the following year.

One of the highlights of Kananji’s stint with Blue Eagles was leading the team to victory in the 2024 FDH Bank Cup after defeating defending champions FCB Nyasa Bullets.

Kananji boasts an impressive coaching resume, having previously managed several TNM Super League clubs including Blantyre United, Bullets, Mighty Wanderers and Civil Service United.
