Kantwanje takes over BSC golf captaincy in style

On a day Hudson Kantwaje officially took over as Blantyre Sports Club (BSC) golf captain from Medson Kalambule, he did it to perfection by emerging the champion in the Captain’s Prize tournament.

Kantwanje playing off handicap 16, stood head and shoulders above a field of 70 golfers to cap his crowning as captain with 34 points. And by sheer coincidence, he counted out his deputy Nestor Msowoya.

“This year’s Captain Prize was tight. When I was stepping on the course, honestly, I did not expect to win, but I guess the birdie I had on fourth hole, gave me a slight edge,” said Kantwanje.

But how did it feel to win the tournament on a day he took over the mantle?

“It feels really great. It is a wonderful coincidence. It had also been a while since I last won a tournament and I felt really great. My game has improved noticeably of late,” he said.

Muhammad Patel was third on 33 points, Ketamyo Mwalwafu finished fourth after counting out Golf Union of Malawi (GUoM) president James Chimwaza.

In ladies category, Margaret Mukwenha emerged the champion on 34 points while rejuvenated Diana Kambale was her runner-up on 30 points. She counted out Zelda Menne. Jenny Mullock was fourth on 30 points whereas Teri Amaro was surprisingly a distant fifth on 29 points.

As per tradition, the outgoing captain Kalambule presented a grey necktie and a rules book to his successor and wished him all the best.

Nico Asset Managers, who were the main sponsors of the event, said they were delighted to be associated with golf.

The company’s chief investments officer Emmanuel Chokani thanked the players and organisers for a wonderful tournament.

He urged the golfers to get started with Nico Asset Managers “where we work to understand your needs and offer informed advice as we execute investment strategies to generate excess returns and provide world-class client solutions.”

The other main sponsors were G4 Secure Solutions Limited. Individual sponsors included Laura Moran, Bhashir Shariff, Agnes Chiweshe, Dingaan Chirwa, Keta Mwalwafu and Generd Tinsmith.
