The street electrification project in Kasungu Municipality is entering a second phase from Kasungu CCAP all the way to Chiphaso, a distance of about 15 kilometres.

Member of Parliament (MP) for Kasungu Central, Ken Kandodo, who is also Minister of Defence, confirmed in an interview that the project will start soon because all preparation are about to be finalised.

“We are very excited with this development. Since the town was upgraded from a town council into a municipality, it automatically meant an increased allocation of funding to the municipality and this has helped us to complete most of the projects that we planned a couple of years ago,” he said.

Kandodo said the first phase, which was completed last year, was a success and there have not been incidents of vandalism as compared with other areas where vandals are stealing electricity appliances from the streets with reckless abandon.

“The outlook of the city has been enhanced and travelling at night is now safer because of the improved street lighting system,” he said.

In another development, Kandodo has disclosed that the municipality will have a new fire fighting machine to replace the old one which is currently grounded.

“As a municipality, there is need to have a fire fighting machine which is operational so that in an event that there is fire it can be used without difficulties,” he said.

He also said that the new Kasungu Stadium will be built this year and tenders for the project will be opened next week.

Kandodo said the K12 million (about $30 000) stadium project will take a year to be completed and it will help the municipality generate a lot of revenue which will be channelled towards other development activities.

“The new stadium will have the capacity of between 15 000 to 20 000 and we hope that it will also force teams in Kasungu to work hard so that we have a Super League team next year,” he said.

A businessperson based at Kasungu Boma, Mavuto Kambwembwe, said the new developments taking place in the municipality will help change its outlook.

“We are talking of street lights, a new stadium and other developmental projects which when completed will make Kasungu a complete municipality.
