Kyungu warns against political violence
Paramount Chief Kyungu of Chitipa and Karonga districts has warned politicians in the country against preaching hatred, inciting violence and mudslinging ahead of the September 16 2025 General Election.
In an interview, he said in a democracy, every politician must uphold values that promote peace, love, tolerance and coexistence.

Kyungu’s remarks came amid concerns from civil society organisations, churches, the diplomatic community and former presidents about incidents of political violence ahead of the elections.
He said: “Let political party leaders focus on issue based campaign. Leaders must tell prospective voters what they should do once voted into power.”
In an interview yesterday, Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) secretary general Peter Mukhito welcomed Kyungu’s remarks, saying the 2025 General Election campaign period provides an opportunity for parties to give hope to the masses.
“For us, it is our responsibility to convey the message of hope and possibility to every corner of our great nation, not violence.
“Therefore, I urge all DPP members to conduct an issue-based campaign, focusing on constructive dialogue and practical solutions,” he said.
His UTM Party counterpart Willet Kalonga said his party is ready to practice mature politics ahead of the polls.
“UTM is a peaceful party and we are more than ready to focus on issue-based campaign. We do not condone the politics of name calling and castigation,” he said.
