MCP women undressed, attacked in Ndirande

Some women wearing Malawi Congress Party (MCP) regalia travelling to Providence Industrial Mission in Chiradzulu for the Chilembwe Day commemoration were on Wednesday abused and nearly beaten in populous Ndirande Township in Blantyre.

The unidentified women were verbally harassed, their party cloth torn and their vehicles stoned.

It took some well-wishers to arrange a minibus to rescue some of the women.

The incident comes a month after Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) legislator Victor Musowa encouraged people during a political rally in the township to deal with anyone chanting the “Kwacha!” slogan associated with MCP.

In an interview on Wednesday, MCP director of publicity Jessie Kabwila accused the DPP of being behind the violence.

She said: “DPP has no basis for denying this incident because their party member Musowa made it clear that MCP followers should be stoned, attacked and killed in Ndirande. We know who is behind the attack.

“As a party, tomorrow we will go and visit the ladies who have been victimised. In fact, we will go to the same place and they will see that MCP cannot draw limits because of them.”

However, DPP spokesperson Shadric Namalomba said his party was not responsible for the attacks on the women.

Said Namalomba: “The perpetrators must swiftly be apprehended, just as we expect for those responsible for the hacking of DPP members in Mponela, Mbowe, and Lilongwe Community ground.”

“DPP does not condone any form of lawlessness.

“Despite MCP’s attempt to shift blame onto the DPP, we are not responsible for these acts.”

Civil society organisations, including the National Advocacy Platform, Centre for Transparency and Social Accountability (Csat) recently made repeated calls for politicians and their followers to promote issue-based campaign and denounce any acts of violence.
