Labour office, employers for job data sharing

Listen to this article

The Blantyre District Labour Office has called for the need for employers and the labour office to share employment data.

Senior labour officer Frank Adini said this during a labour legislation awareness training held in Blantyre meant to discuss labour laws with various leaders of trade unions.

“The other aim of the training was to create a conducive working environment for employers and workers by creating a common understanding of labour laws,” he said.

Adini said various trade union leaders from the informal, public and private sectors were invited to this training to inform and remind them of labour laws and also to equip them with skills to bargain collectively and more effectively.

“The city has issues with the employment data since it is not accurate because various employers do not send information to the labour office on employments and terminations. The only employment data that the labour office has is of workers employed through it.” he said.

Textile trade union administrator Agnes Zingwa said the training was beneficial because it tackled issues concerning collective bargaining which she said are crucial for the welfare of workers.
