Lawi, Namadingo conquer Lilongwe
The much-touted Lawi and Namadingo Easter joint tour reached its climax in Lilongwe Saturday night when the two artists staged an impressive show at Bingu International Convention Centre (Bicc).
The two artists proved why they are among Malawi’s top musicians with their performance and interaction with the fans throughout the show.
The show, which had an impressive audience, ended shortly after midnight much to the satisfaction of the fans who graced the occasion.
By mid-night, Lawi was still on stage. He invited his counterpart, Patience Namadingo and challenged him to do a free styletrack.
Their song was later dubbed ‘Oho’ which is a Chichewa word for acceptance or agreement, acknowledgement, or in some cases surprise or wonder, depending on the context. The two were visibly enjoying their collaboration as they took turns in their performance.
In unison the fans kept on chanting, even after Namadingo had resumed his seat, prompting him to go back on stage to join Lawi.
Ndaona nyimboyi yakoma, (and the crowd responded); Oho! The reason I am back here on stage, oho! I want to tell you that, oho! We have CDs out there, oho! Please buy from us, oho! Or else tiyaluka, oho!
Lawi proved his prowess as he braved technical hitches that threatened to shatter the momentum built by Namadingo’s performance earlier on.
As he introduced each track, one would be tempted to think his music was autobiographical.
Although Namadingo’s music is meant for the ear and not really for dancing, he proved that he can also play danceable tunes as he commanded the audience to stand up and dance to one of his songs.
The tour winds up tonight at Comesa Hall, having started in Mzuzu on Friday. n
