Legends plan four nations tournament
Football Legends Association (FLA) says it is discussing the possibility of staging a four-nations tournament with its counterparts from Zambia, South Africa and Mozambique.
The association’s board chairperson and founder Jim Kalua said this after Saturday’s international friendly between Malawi legends and their Zambian counterparts at Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe which ended goaless.
“We have had preliminary discussions on the matter with our Zambian and South African counterparts with whom we are in partnership. We are also engaging our friends in Mozambique to have the four-nations legends’ tournament,” he said.
“We have not agreed on some crucial logistics such as the venue yet, but in the next few months, we will have made progress.”
Kalua also said they were happy with the turnout and the support from their partners.
“We were satisfied with the crowd and the support was massive,” he said.
“The corporate world was also there for us and that we raised a little over K30 million is proof of the trust and confidence they have in us.”
Kalua further said they were satisfied with the K16 million gross gate revenue.
“This is excluding tickets bought through Mpamba debit card and we are very happy,” he said.
Kalua said proceeds from the match will be channelled towards initiatives they have lined up, including medical aid, business loans and conducting football clinics.
Minister of Youth and Sports Uchizi Mkandawire hailed the association for the initiatives, saying they will help them become self-sustainable.
He said: “It is encouraging to hear about initiatives such as sale of replica jerseys, opening of a shop at Chitipi in Lilongwe and organising international friendly. matches.
“It shows the efforts they are putting in and that is why companies and organisations are willing to partner them.”
South Africa-based Ernest former Flames coach and captain Ernest Wire’ Mtawali said the legends grouping is meeting its objectives.
“The most important thing is that it has brought us together and we are able to assist each other in many ways. That’s how it ought to be,” he said.
