The Chinese Community in Lilongwe has given K75 million to the Malawi Government to help in its response to the impact of Tropical Cyclone Freddy which has killed more than 400 people.

The community’s chairperson Zhou Shanjian presented the cheque to President Lazarus Chakwera at Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe.

He said K45 million will be in form of relief items while K30 million is cash to help government to better respond to the needs of survivors affected by the cyclone in some districts in the Southern Region.

While commending Chakwera and his government for the swift response to the disaster, Shanjian observed that the damage the storm caused was huge, saying government alone cannot address the challenges emanating from the disaster.

In a statement, Chakwera is quoted as having commended the Chinese community, describing their assistance as timely.

He said the assistance will go a long way in responding to the requirements of the people in the evacuation camps.

“We are grateful to your community for this donation. I wish to assure you that this donation will be used for its intended purpose,” said Chakwera.
