Offering training: DJ Skappa

Youths aspiring to take up different roles in the music industry have a chance to access some formal training courtesy of a music school scheduled to open soon.

Skappa DJ Academy is a brainchild of prominent DJ Skappa, real name James Ibrahim, and will be offering courses in DJing, sound engineering, video dj’ing, voice notes and keys, radio and TV presentation, script writing, among other small courses.

In an interview, DJ Skappa said the aim is to offer basic skills to many youths who aspire to work in the music and entertainment industry but lack the technical know-how to go about the business.

“We want to be offering guitar lessons as well as establishing a recording studio from where we will be producing music,” he said.

DJ Skappa said a number of individuals have already started registering for the first semester to start later this month.

He boasts of an impressive CV, having done professional training in Djing and sound engineering in Mozambique. He won the sprite DJ competition for the Central Region. He has also had stints with Galaxy FM and Beta TV where he worked as presenter and graphic designer respectively.

Though this is the case, he has engaged other professionals in specific fields who will be offering lessons at the institution.

Arts commentator Sam Chiwaka said the development is long overdue as many local Djs have failed to command the respect that they otherwise deserve because of their lack of professional qualifications.
