Lions Club of Blantyre plants trees to restore Lilangwe riverbanks
The Lions Club of Blantyre has spearheaded a tree-planting initiative that saw 1,000 tree seedlings planted along the banks of the Lilangwe River in Gulani Village, Traditional Authority Chigalu.
Speaking during the tree-planting exercise, the Club’s President, Grace Nyambo, underscored the importance of reforestation as a crucial aspect of their community service programs.

“As one of our key pillars, we recognize the importance of environmental conservation, and this tree-planting initiative is a direct contribution to sustaining local ecosystems,” Nyambo said.
The initiative aims to restore degraded riverbanks, enhance biodiversity, and mitigate the effects of climate change by promoting sustainable environmental practices in the region.
Senior Environment Management Officer from the Electricity Generation Company (Egenco)’s Projects Department, Lawrence Chilimampunga, commended the Lions Club of Blantyre for their proactive efforts in environmental restoration.
He emphasized that the Lilangwe River is a crucial water source for Egenco, which operates key hydroelectric power stations in Malawi. “Such initiatives play a significant role in safeguarding water resources essential for power generation and the surrounding communities,” Chilimampunga stated.
The tree-planting campaign drew participation from local residents, environmental groups, and other stakeholders, reflecting a shared commitment to preserving natural resources for future generations. The Lions Club of Blantyre reaffirmed its dedication to undertaking more projects that contribute to the well-being of communities and the environment.
