Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (Macra) has asked the M’Mbelwa District Council to own the National Addressing System (NAS) Project the authority is implementing in the district.

Macra communications manager Zadziko Makhambo made the call on Saturday during a full council meeting to brief the project’s stakeholders.

He said they engaged the council to promote awareness about the project.

Ndhlovu: The council is ready

“We are implementing NAS project which seeks to identify all areas in Malawi using the physical address format. This means Mzimba District will have postcodes and all traditional authorities (T/As) in the district will also have post codes,” said Makhambo.

He said all roads and locations in the district will have a name while houses found along those roads will be allocated a number for easy identification.

However, Makhambo bemoaned vandalism, saying it is a setback to the project’s implementation.

M’Mbelwa District Council chairperson Evance Ndhlovu said the council is ready to work with Macra on the project.

He said: “We welcome the project and we are happy that they have given us the opportunity to work with them in naming these locations and roads.

“Our call to Macra is that they should employ people from the communities during the project implementation.”

Senior Chief Mabulabo said chiefs will help in promoting awareness about the project in their communities.
